Celebrating Pad Thai: 3 surprising facts about the go-to dish

Facts
PAD THAI

One of the most simple and tasty street food dishes is the Pad Thai.

Served with rice noodles stir-fried with eggs and some tofu, shrimp, chicken or pork. Typically, tamarind pulp, fish sauce, garlic, chilli, and sugar are used to flavour it. A straightforward lime wedge or some chopped, roasted peanuts are acceptable garnishes.

In a meal that often costs the equivalent of less than £1 in Thailand, these simple ingredients are combined in an explosion of flavour. Here are some interesting facts about this delicious meal

It’s a meal that has influenced Asian Culture

Pad Thai is a relatively recent dish that dates to the early 1930s, at a period of ultra-nationalism, when a democratic government replaced the nation’s absolute monarchy.

Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, the then-prime minister, organised a public competition to discover a new national noodle dish, and the winning recipe was very similar to the one we now know as Pad Thai.

It wasn’t only a cooking competition; one of the goals was to reduce Chinese influence by getting people to stop eating wheat noodles, which were widely consumed at the time.

Patience and a big pan are essential to making the Perfect Pad Thai

In order to prevent clumps of greasy, sticky noodles, cook fewer pieces at once and increase the surface area.

There’s a scientific reason to why it’s so delicious

When prepared correctly, the meal hits the mouth’s five flavour characteristics of salty, sour, sweet, spicy, and bitter.
